North Or South?
You have two main options when travelling to Cyprus. Larnaca Airport in the South or Ercan Airport in the North.
There are currently more airlines flying direct to Larnaca from the UK and other countries. Flying to Ercan Airport requires a short stop in Istanbul, Turkey. A stopover in Istanbul makes it possible to incorporate a fabulous sightseeing tour of the city as part of your holiday.
If you fly to Larnaca, you can either hire a car or take a taxi to the Kyrenia area in the North of Cyprus. Average taxi prices are 80 pounds sterling return. The journey takes about 75 minutes each way. Most car hire companies in Larnaca will allow you to drive directly to the North part of Cyprus. You will need to buy additional insurance costing around 25 pounds sterling at the border check post. The insurance office is open 24 hours a day. The advantage of hiring a car in the South is that it can be driven in both the North and South parts of the island.
If you hire a car in the North part of the island you will not be permitted to take it to the South. However, it is perfectly possible to use taxis should you wish to visit the South.
